The vast majority of stations streaming at the moment use 32k bitrate, but over the last week or so Clear Channel owned stations in San Francisco such as Wild 94.9 and Star 101.3 have upped their bitrate to 64k.So why is bitrate important for streaming? When you compare the station output on FM to the Internet stream with 32k bitrate, the difference in sound quality is noticeable. Previously, when most Internet listening came through rubbish computer speakers then this wasn't an issue. But now as listeners become more sophisticated by hooking their PCs up to stereo systems, using Internet radios or listening through headphones at work, sound quality is more important. Most people rip their CDs at 128k bitrate or more and songs purchased through iTunes use the aac encoding to deliver superior fidelity, meanwhile streams of terrestrial FM radio stations are sound more like AM stations with less hiss.
Internationally, most European stations stream at 64k or more. For example in London, UK, Capital Radio, XFM, Choice FM and Virgin Radio all stream at 128k, while Heart 106.2, Magic 105.4, Kiss 100, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 all stream at 64k.So, will more North American stations catch up to their European peers and improve the quality of their streams?

I really hope stations realize there are still those of us out there on dial-up that would like to enjoy online audio as well.
Many still use dial-up for many reasons - some hate (or distrust) both the cable and phone company in their area (and/or view their services as an overpriced monopoly), or they live where dial-up is the only option, and for some dial-up is the only form of ISP service they can afford (dial-up can be purchased for a little as $3.95/mo. nowdays). Also, dial-up is still used by people who hit the road quite a bit, and maybe, say, want to listen to the station from home?!
Some stations (even ones listed on the site) offer both a high and a low feed, with the low feed being about 32k at the most. If there are ads or other things, that clogs up the connection and makes the stream unlistenable. Add in those (IMO, annoying) mandatory flash players and other things that (again, IMO) shouldn't be necessary to get streaming audio through a connection, and that's enough for people to say "forget it" and give up entirely. If/when they do switch to another type of internet connection, they'll remember their bad experience the same way they'd remember a bad experience at the grocery store.
BTW, we're also not really looking for high-fidelity, high-quality audio... for that, there's other forms of media available.

Les conséquences de cette désobéissance (indépendance) est donc: la mort, la maladie, la haine, la tuerie6, l'égoïsme de certains dirigeants, l'hypocrisie de la religion... Les conséquences de cette épreuve d' indépendance (qui a eu lieu sur notre terre) est très importante à démontrer à l égard des anges du ciel et des êtres humains aussi voilà pourquoi dieu Jah n' a pas tué Satan, Adam et Eve sur le champs.
